THE HISTORY OF EASTERN MARKET

 Founded November 12, 1873

Local markets were an original part of L’Enfant’s 1791 vision for the city of Washington. And so, Eastern Market was completed on November 12, 1873 as part of this original plan. Designed by Adolf Cluss—a renowned local architect of the time—Eastern Market was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971.

As the only historic public market building left in Washington, DC that has retained its original public market function, Eastern Market houses more than 12 merchants—some  of whom have held their businesses here for more than 50 years. On weekends, it is home to a vibrant outdoor market with arts and crafts from around the world, farm fresh produce, and prepared food to eat or take home.

Having been rebuilt from a devastating fire in 2007, through a collaborative community effort, Eastern Market continues to stand as a hub in the community, and now we celebrate its 150th birthday, its resiliency, and its place as the heart of our neighborhood.
